Sweet Trading: Chocolate May Have Linked Ancient Civilizations

Researchers know of the earliest use of chocolate in Mesoamerica as part of a routine involving a liquid drink made from cocoa beans going back more than 1,000 years. Remains of chocolate left in ancient glasses mark the first evidence of its early presence in what is now Mexico. That's according to a paper published today in PNAS by researcher Dorothy Washburn of the University of Pennsylvania and her associates. Crown has long been interested by ceramic cylinders discovered in Pueblo Bonito in the Chaco Canyon, which he looked into as part of his research study into the history of the US Southwest. Pueblo Bonito (Spanish for "lovely city") was developed and used by the Chacoans of the New Mexico Pueblos at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century and became the center of the Chacoan society.
